The Spiegeltent Returns!

You know it is autumn in the Yarra River Precinct when the Famous Spiegeltent reappears on the Arts Centre forecourt, taking centre stage along St Kilda Road.

It’s a little bit of the olde-worlde entertainment venues, reminiscent of the travelling sideshows of past times. But, there’s nothing old fashioned about the entertainment available inside.

The venue kicks off late March with a season of seasoned comedians Paul Mc Dermott and Peter Helliar.

Paul is teaming with Gatesy for this year’s show, entitled ‘Go Solo’. It promises “songs of beauty, songs of heartbreak, freshly minted comedy concoctions, old squabbles and spontaneous nonsense”.

For those old enough to remember Paul’s early days in the ‘Doug Anthony All Stars’, you’ll know that he is one of Australia’s most talented comedic musicians, with a golden voice. For those who only know him recently as a quiz show host, at least you’ll appreciate his sharp wit and repartee. Warning – don’t sit too close to the front, otherwise you might find yourself part of his show !

Peter Helliar is the much-loved, laid-back TV comedian who  has been enchanting us for years. His knock-about image and self-deprecating style hides a sharp brain and great comedic timing.

When Paul and Peter finish their gigs in the Spiegeltent each night, a very different and startlingly flamboyant performance takes to the stage: ‘Haus of Hans: Disco Spektacular’.

It positively drips in glitter and diamonds. Be transported into the opulent New York City club scene of the early 80s and 90s, a world where rules are thrown out the window. International award winning comedy and cabaret star Hans presents an evening of disco, dance and drama.

As seen on America's Got Talent, Australia's Got Talent, Eurovision: Australia Decides Live 2019, Celebrity Name Game, Sunrise, The Morning Show, Today Extra, ABC News Breakfast...basically, Hans has been on every TV show. He’s also the winner of Best Cabaret at the 2019 Adelaide Fringe Festival and the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
